WHAT WE DO

“Each beat tracks how pressure transforms the protagonist—whether they rise, break, or surrender to the truth.”

“Each beat tracks how pressure transforms the protagonist—whether they rise, break, or surrender to the truth.”

My work is rooted in narrative structure—specifically the Protagonist’s Plight. I write using my own 12 Story Beats framework, a drama-forward system inspired by other methods like Save the Cat and the Hero’s Journey but designed to be more stringent on the Protagonist. Each beat tracks how pressure transforms the protagonist—whether they rise, break, or surrender to the truth. I used this framework to co-write Tribes of the Vampire TV pilot, shaping the story around inevitability rather than spectacle.

Beyond screenwriting, I bring the same discipline to directing, creative development, and documentary filmmaking. From screenplays to short-form branded content, my focus is always on clarity of intention, emotional momentum, and stories that feel lived-in rather than manufactured. I migrated from New Zealand to the U.S. in 2016 and have since worked across scripted and nonfiction storytelling—writing original screenplays, and producing an award-winning documentary.

FRAMEWORK

12 Story Beats

12 Story Beats

The Protagonist’s Plight

The 12 Story Beats framework centers on the Protagonist’s Plight. In the beginning, our often naïve and unsuspecting Protagonist stands on the brink of change. Destined for a transformation, they will undergo a metamorphosis that serves their deepest needs, whether they like it or not. The 12 Story Beats chart a path through the classic three-act structure, guiding the Protagonist as they struggle to overcome adversity and claim their story. With every beat, the Protagonist is tested and shaped—wearing them down until they submit to the underlying process that will propel them either toward their goal or their demise.

The 12 Story Beats

ACT 1

Beat 1: In the beginning: We meet the protagonist in their world or story setting.

Beat 2: Someone needs to hear this: The protagonist is exposed to the goal.

Beat 3: The Trigger: An event that forces the protagonist to face the truth.

Beat 4: Living in denial: The protagonist tries ignoring the truth.

Beat 5: Accepting one’s fate: The protagonist accepts their fate.

ACT 2

Beat 6: Feet first: With reckless abandon the protagonist attacks the goal.

Beat 7: No turning back: Right or wrong, the protagonist doubles down.

Beat 8: I told you so: Reality punches the protagonist in the face!

Beat 9: The lowest of lows: The protagonist experiences the darkest of nights in hell.

ACT 3

Beat 10: A slither of hope: Somehow the protagonist finds a way out.

Beat 11: The comeback: The protagonist applies learnings and reaches their goal or not.

Beat 12: The spoils: The protagonist savors the spoils and is remembered or fails and is forgotten.

The Protagonist's Plight

The Protagonist's Plight

“The Protagonist’s Plight is the transformation that a character endures in the course of a story, so the audience is entertained and inspired during their escape from reality.”

“The Protagonist’s Plight is the transformation that a character endures in the course of a story, so the audience is entertained and inspired during their escape from reality.”

What is the Protagonist’s Plight?

The Protagonist’s Plight are a combination of internal beliefs and external forces that promote and propel change. In the beginning, naivety and circumstance are catalysts that push the Protagonist into uncharted territory.

This plight is not simply a problem to solve, or a barrier to overcome, but a condition to endure. As the story unfolds, the protagonist is worn down by consequences, resistance, and hard truths until transformation becomes inevitable—metamorphosis. Whether they rise, break, or fail, their plight shapes the ebb and flow of the story and how they are ultimately remembered.

How is the Protagonist’s Plight used in the 12 Story Beats?

In the 12 Story Beats framework, the Protagonist’s Plight is the spine of the narrative. Each beat tests the beliefs and values that the Protagonist relies upon:

  • Act 1 introduces the protagonist in a state of denial, exposing them to a truth or goal they initially resist.
  • Act 2 escalates the plight through reckless action, stubborn commitment, and brutal confrontation with reality.
  • Act 3 forces resolution—the protagonist must apply what they’ve learned or suffer the cost of failing to change.

Rather than tracking plot events alone, each beat measures how the protagonist is psychologically tested and reshaped by the story’s demands.

How does the Protagonist’s Plight differ from the Hero’s Journey?

As opposed to the Hero’s Journey, the Protagonist’s Plight follows a darker path toward the goal.

Unlike the Hero’s Journey—which emphasizes growth through courage, mentorship, and triumph—the Protagonist’s Plight leans into the darker mechanics of character transformation, allowing for self-destruction to run its brutal course and for the forces of nature and the universe to wield their powers until change is the only option.

Progress is not earned through noble intention, but through attrition. The story advances because the protagonist keeps making human mistakes, doubling down on flawed beliefs, and resisting the truth until reality leaves them no other option.

In this way, the Protagonist’s Plight is less about becoming a hero—and more about surviving the consequences of being human.

NYT Bestseller Michelle M. Pillow Signals Transmedia Expansion for Tribes of the Vampire with New Pilot Script and Pan Macmillan Tor Bramble Publishing Deal

LONDON, ENGLAND, January 24, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ — New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Michelle M. Pillow today announced the completion of the pilot script for her gothic urban fantasy series, Tribes of the Vampire. The screenplay development marks a significant milestone in the series’ expansion, coinciding with a high-profile seven-book deal with Tor Bramble UK (Pan Macmillan) and a rapid-release audiobook schedule launching this February.

The Tribes of the Vampire series, celebrated for its rich, gothic world-building in the tradition of Anne Rice, is currently undergoing a massive global relaunch. The newly finished pilot script, developed by Pillow and her filmmaker husband, John Reyer Afamasaga, adapts the dark antiheroes and forbidden attractions of the books to the screen and streaming platforms.

“Seeing these characters transition from page to a screenplay has been an incredible creative journey,” said Pillow. “With Tor Bramble introducing the series to a global audience this year, it was the perfect time to finalize a vision for a television and streaming adaptation that captures the high stakes and detailed world-building that my readers expect.”

The announcement comes as Tor Bramble UK begins its ambitious 2026 rollout of the series. The relaunch kicks off in February 2026 with new audiobook editions of Redeemer of Shadows (Book 1) and The Jaded Hunter (Book 2), narrated by the award-winning Natalie Naudus as Victoria Mei. The momentum continues in March 2026 with the audio releases of Books 3 and 4.

While the pilot script is currently being shopped, the synergy between the global book relaunch and the new audio format positions Tribes of the Vampire as a premier property for the surging Romantasy and Gothic Fantasy markets.
